For some of us, Christmas party season, in the same vein as summer weddings, can be that moment of the year where we forget about trying to be more mindful with our shopping choices and head to the high street in a last-minute dash to find something to wear to the office party that we'll never step out in again.
If this sounds familiar, then it might be time to consider investing in pieces that you know won't date, partywear that will transcend trends and, while still head-turning and fun, you will be able to rely on every December.
From velvet to sequins, the trouser suit to the strappy sandal, here are five Christmas party trends that will always be in fashion.

Whether it's the Sixties, the Nineties or now, velvet at Christmastime is always in style. The festive fabric is one you know you can rely on to ensure you look party-ready, but will never date (during December at least).
If you are building a Christmas party capsule wardrobe, we suggest investing in a beautiful velvet frock (in green or red for an extra festive touch) or turning to the fabric with your accessories. A velvet bag, shoes or hair accessory will instantly elevate a more casual ensemble and make it party-appropriate.

There is also no denying the appeal of sparkle during celebration season and, while sequins may have their more relevant moments on the catwalk, they will always be fitting for those Christmas parties. It is another easy way to bring your more daytime-appropriate looks into the evening (try jeans with a sparkly top) or they are a great option for going all-out with head-to-toe shine for that big event.

The Little Black Dress is probably a piece that is already part of your capsule wardrobe, making it an even better investment for the Christmas period. The classic item can come in all shapes and styles, but if you want one that will work season after season, we suggest you keep it simple – shift dresses, strappy styles and bodice-fits are a great call. Another classic wardrobe piece which will serve you well all-year round, time and time again, is the trouser suit. Loved by A-listers and fashion editors alike, the two-piece is a sure-fire way of looking nonchalantly chic, whatever the occasion.
If you are investing in one for the festive season particularly, don't be afraid to have fun with the material (velvet and satin will serve you well) or to play with embellishment – a touch of sparkle will never go out of fashion during the festive season, especially on some traditional tailoring.

When it comes to footwear, there is one pair of shoes that you can be sure will work with pretty much any party ensemble: the strappy sandal. While there are more trend-led designs to choose from, including kitten-heeled mules or crystal pumps, the strappy sandal can be styled with anything and everything, and you can be certain that they'll still look the part for your Christmas party in five years time.
