Greta Gerwig is set to bring Little Women to the big screen once again.

The actress, who co-wrote her films Frances Ha and Mistress America, will pen a new script based on Louisa May Alcott's beloved children's novel.

Set in the 19th century, the novel focuses on four sisters – Jo, Meg, Amy and Beth – as they grow from children into adults. Its protagonist, Jo March, is known for her independent, proto-feminist attitude as she embarks on a career as a writer and intellectual despite the social stigma.

The book has been adapted into a film six times before, with the last one being the 1994 version starring Winona Ryder, Kirsten Dunst and Christian Bale. It was nominated for three Academy Awards, including Best Actress for Ryder.
